My mother’s name was Myrtle Riley and she grew up on a farm outside of Rosalia Washington. Her story was that every Christmas Eve all 6 children would get excited about the fact that Santa Claus was coming. That was the big thing. It was Santa Claus was going to come Christmas Eve. They would decorate and get all ready, but they never got to see him, strangely. Their dad said if they would come down with him to the barn to feed the animals, the cows and the horses in the barn, why maybe by the time they got back to the house Santa Claus might have come. So they got down to the barn and started gathering the eggs that were scattered around in the bins. All of a sudden he pulled out a very large egg. He said, “Look here, Myrtle, Frances, Georgia, Verda, Lester and Wayne. See this large egg. This is a rooster egg. The rooster knows when Christmas Eve comes, he has to lay this egg.” So they would get back to the house and all of a sudden all of the presents and things were under the tree. He said, “Roosters always, and only laid eggs on Christmas Eve.”
